Dr. Kathy A. Banks is a graduate of Rutgers University College of Arts and Sciences, Camden with a B.A. in biology and Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia. She attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program, Camden and Stratford, and then completed her Post Graduate Residency Program Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. She is a Diplomat of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Banks is an attending oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey and holds a volunteer faculty teaching position at Rutgers Dental School. She is an active staff member of the Southern Ocean Medical Center Department of Surgery.
Dr. Banks is past president and of the Monmouth-Ocean County Dental Society, and serves as Trustee on its Board. She was the first female president of the New Jersey Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; serves as the AAOMS District II Caucus Secretary and represents New Jersey in the AAOMS House of delegates. She is member of the American Dental Association, The New Jersey Dental Association, a fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
Dr. Banks is thought of as a leader in the specialty among her peers. In 2017, she took the helm of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation Board of Trustees, our nation’s only foundation strictly dedicated to funding research, innovation, humanitarian and educational endeavors limited to improving patient care within the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The Foundation tirelessly raises funds and grants an average of $750,000 per year to worthy programs. Dr. Banks has recently completed her third and final year as the Chair of the AAOMS Committee on Health Care Policy, Coding and Reimbursement. This busy committee is dedicated to educating and informing oral and maxillofacial surgeons regarding correct coding, claims submissions, and governmental and healthcare industry changes that affect the practices of oms’s throughout the country and the patients they serve. She is an active participant on OMSPAC, the specialty’s political activist group, and travels to Washington, DC every year to meet with New Jersey’s elected representatives to discuss health care policy that affects the patients she cares for. This year, Dr. Banks has been asked to participate on the OMSNIC (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery National Insurance Company, RRG.) Case Review Committee, and has served previously on its Appeals Committee and Advisory Board.
Dr. Banks is enthusiastic about education and continuing education. As an member of the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Hackensack Meridian System, she is course director and teaches comprehensive courses for dental hygienists and dental assistants concerning safe and effecting monitoring of nitrous oxide and oxygen inhalation analgesia, Infection Control and Sterilization for Dental Offices, and continuing education for dental hygienists in the safe and effective delivery of local anesthesia. Previously she partnered with two other oral and maxillofacial surgery colleagues to teach safe and effective delivery of injectable pharmacologic agents, a New Jersey State Board of Dentistry approved course designed to provide dentists with didactic and hands on education regarding the usage of injectable products like Botox® and Juvederm® She lectures as a volunteer at Rutgers University School of Dental Medicine for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and teaches post graduate dental residents in the Hospital and Dental Facilities of Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Dr. Banks is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in private practice in Barnegat, New Jersey.
